Dj lived in Seattle for three short months, eight years ago. We tried really hard to find his old apartment, but had no luck. Bothel? Bellevue?
We started talking to some locals for suggestions on where to visit. The Ballard Dam came up, so we headed over there. We watched a ship enter the lock and the water rise and fall to let the boat pass. The dam was designed to let the migrating salmon pass without dying. The white tubes in the picture is for the young salmon to make their way back to the ocean, which happens around the end of May. Along the side of the dam they have a ladder to help the adult salmon reach their breeding ground in the fall. A beautiful little park surrounds the dam.
We love our chocolate, so when I found out about a local chocolate company, I signed us up. Theo chocolates buyes their beans and turns them into chocolate, something that very few companies do anymore. It is 100% fair trade and organic. Their bars are 45-91% cocoa--very rich chocolate. Dark chocolate is usually only 40% cocoa. And it tastes a little bit like chalk. For $4 a bar? We ate a lot of free samples. We are standing next to bags of cocoa mulch, for those gardeners who what their garden to smell like chocolate when it rains. This is actually a really good picture to see what the average neighborhoods are like in Seattle--neat, clean, nicely paved, very pleasant, all the nice things a person would like in an area...
Theo chocolates is located in Fremont, home of the troll. He is kind of a cute guy with an appetite for VW bugs and a hubcab for an eye. Fremont was a cute little Seattle neighborhood, with tons of interesting stores and a nice park along the water.
